WAVE Achieves First Cloud-to-Gateway Satcom Virtualization with AI Signal Analysis

Members of the Waveform Architecture for Virtualized Ecosystems (WAVE) Consortium, an IEEE standards body, achieved the first instance of standardized waveform virtualization using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) acceleration in the cloud during SATShow last week.

WAVE members AWSGilat Defense, and SES Space & Defense accomplished multiple firsts during a SATShow demonstration, said WAVE Executive Director Juan Deaton. “The biggest one is being able to connect a virtualized cloud platform to an SES gateway, which is something that has not been done before using digital IF.”

Waveform Architecture for Virtualized Ecosystems (WAVE)

The mission of WAVE is to transform the SATCOM industry towards a fully interoperable ecosystem by using intelligent, open, and virtualized networks and providing standardized architectures and specifications.

WAVE Gateway Draft Specification V0.0 Specification

The WAVE Gateway, integral to the WAVE standards, standardizes the integration of FPGA accelerators with virtualized environments for satellite communications, utilizing Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration for efficient, adaptable waveform processing. It employs a modular, scalable framework to ensure interoperability across diverse hardware and software. This approach aims to significantly improve SATCOM network flexibility and reduce operational costs by facilitating easier deployment of third-party waveforms on common hardware platforms.
